The 901 613 503 20 is a dashboard-mounted mechanical or push-pull switch used in early Porsche 911 / 911S / 911L and 912 models (1960s era) to activate the front fog lights. It is often grouped with the rear-window heating and warning-light switches, depending on vehicle specification.
In use, pulling or pressing the switch completes the circuit for the fog lights, sending power (via fuse and relay) to the fog lamp units. The switch usually has an internal light (“light-pipe”) or indicator so you can tell when fog lights are active.
Fits:
- Porsche 911 65-68 + 911S, 912 USA version 911L with red lighting strip
- Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
- Porsche 912E 4CYL 1976
Why / when it should be replaced
· Even though the fog light switch is a relatively simple component, there are several reasons why it might need replacing:
· Internal wear or contact failure. Over time, the internal contacts inside the switch can wear, corrode, or lose tension, leading to poor electrical contact. If that happens, the fog lights may not activate when the switch is engaged.
· No illumination of the switch itself. On models where the switch includes a light-pipe or internal lamp so that you can see the switch position, failure of that internal illumination can make it harder to know whether the fog lights are on and may indicate internal switch failure.
· Switch stuck or mechanically broken. The pull/knob mechanism may become sticky, stuck, or physically break, especially after decades of use, or due to heat/cockpit environment ageing. A switch that doesn’t move properly or won’t stay in the “on” position cannot reliably activate the fog lights.
· Intermittent operation / flickering. Even if the switch appears to work, intermittent contact inside the switch might cause the fog lights to flicker, drop out, or not turn off properly.
· Fuse or wiring feedback problems. In some cases, a failing switch can lead to blown fog-light fuses or feedback to wiring loops, especially if there is an internal short or poor contact. Replacing the switch may be required after troubleshooting electrical issues.

What Does the Additional Front Fog Lamp Lens Do?
The fog lamp lens is an important part of the auxiliary lighting system.
Its primary functions include:
- Protecting the fog lamp reflector and bulb from water, dirt and road debris.
- Directing and diffusing the fog lamp beam correctly.
- Improving visibility during fog, rain and poor weather conditions.
- Helping maintain the weatherproof integrity of the fog lamp assembly.
- Preserving the original appearance of the front lighting system.
A clear, undamaged lens is essential for maximum light output and correct beam performance.
Why Does the Fog Lamp Lens Need Replacing?
Mounted low on the front of the vehicle, fog lamp lenses are constantly exposed to harsh road conditions.
Common causes of deterioration include:
- Stone chips from road debris.
- Cracks caused by minor impacts.
- Surface scratches and pitting.

Manufactured using high-quality automotive-grade reflective material with a durable UV-resistant lens and weather-resistant housing, the reflector is engineered to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture, road debris and temperature extremes without fading, cracking or losing its reflective properties. Precision-manufactured to replicate the original Porsche dimensions, it provides direct OE-style installation, making it ideal for restoration projects, accident repairs or replacing damaged or missing original reflectors.
What This Product Does:
- Provides passive rear visibility by reflecting light from following vehicles.
- Mounts securely within the rear bumper quarter rubber.
- Enhances vehicle visibility in low-light conditions.
- Helps improve road safety when parked or driving at night.
- Restores the original appearance of the rear bumper.
- Replaces faded, cracked or missing reflectors.
- Maintains factory exterior styling.
- Forms an essential part of the vehicle's rear safety and trim system.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
- Cracked or broken reflector lens.
- Faded or discoloured reflective surface.
- Reduced reflectivity at night.
- Loose or missing reflector.
- Water ingress behind the reflector.
- Scratches or impact damage.
- Poor appearance of the rear bumper.
- Damaged mounting points.
- Reduced vehicle visibility to other road users.
- MOT or vehicle inspection advisory due to damaged reflector.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Rear reflectors play an important role in passive vehicle safety by making the vehicle more visible to other road users in low-light conditions. Over time, exposure to UV rays, moisture, road debris and minor impacts can cause the reflector to fade, crack or become detached, reducing its effectiveness and detracting from the vehicle's appearance.
- A damaged or missing reflector reduces rear visibility and may result in MOT or roadworthiness issues, depending on the vehicle's condition. It can also compromise the authentic appearance of a classic Porsche, particularly during restoration or concours preparation.
- Replacing the original component with the OE Match Rear Bumper Reflector in Quarter Rubber restores both safety and originality. Manufactured to OE standards using premium-quality reflective materials, it provides factory-style fitment, excellent weather resistance and long-lasting durability, ensuring your Porsche retains its correct appearance and remains clearly visible in all driving conditions.

Porsche Fog & Driving Lamps | Clarity, Safety & Performance Lighting
Fog and driving lamps are essential lighting components that enhance visibility during adverse weather or low-light conditions. Positioned low on the front bumper, fog lamps illuminate the road immediately ahead, cutting through mist, rain, and dust, while driving lamps provide long-range light for night or performance driving. Over time, exposure to heat, vibration, and moisture can reduce their effectiveness — making replacement vital for safety and appearance.
At Design911, we supply premium fog and driving lamps engineered for precision fitment, durability, and optimal beam performance. Our range includes standard halogen units, high-performance LED conversions, and smoked or clear-lens upgrades — all crafted to meet Porsche’s design and performance standards.
Whether you’re restoring a classic 911 or upgrading a Cayman or Cayenne for better visibility, Design911’s lighting range ensures you can see — and be seen — in all conditions.
What Do Fog and Driving Lamps Do?
Fog and driving lamps improve safety and confidence in challenging driving environments by enhancing forward visibility and road illumination.
Core Functions:
- Fog
lamps provide a wide, low-angled beam to reduce glare and illuminate
the road in fog, rain, or snow.
- Driving
lamps project a longer, brighter beam for enhanced distance vision.
- Improve overall lighting balance with dipped and main beams.
- Increase road presence and style with Porsche’s signature lighting design.
- Comply with road safety and visibility regulations.
These lamps ensure your Porsche performs safely and confidently — no matter the conditions.
Why Do Fog & Driving Lamps Fail or Degrade?
Even precision-engineered lighting components can deteriorate over time due to weather, road debris, and age.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Cracked or chipped lenses from stone impact.
- Water ingress leading to fogging or corrosion.
- Faded reflectors or dull lenses reducing light output.
- Burnt-out bulbs or LED module failure.
- Damaged housings or mounting brackets from vibration or contact.
When fog or driving lamps fail, visibility decreases dramatically — compromising safety and diminishing your Porsche’s premium aesthetic.
Why Replace or Upgrade Your Porsche Fog / Driving Lamps?
Replacing worn or damaged lamps restores full lighting performance, while LED or smoked-lens upgrades add a modern, performance-driven look.
Key Benefits:
- Restores maximum visibility in fog, rain, or low-light conditions.
- Enhances safety and driver confidence.
- Improves light clarity and beam distance with modern LED or HID technology.
