Cayman 987C/981C (2005-2016)

The Cayman S debuted in 2005 as a 2006 model, followed by the base Cayman in 2006 as a 2007 model. Both shared the mid-engine platform and many components with the second-generation Boxster, including chassis, wheelbase, and width. Despite different sheet metal, they shared windscreens, doors, cabins, and 40% of components, with others borrowed from the 911 or adapted. The Cayman’s fixed roof increased torsional rigidity by 150% and lowered the drag coefficient to 0.29.

The Cayman S featured a 3.4ltr flat-six engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the base model had a 2.7ltr engine with a 5-speed transmission. Both offered an optional 5-speed automatic (Tiptronic). In 2008, Boxster models received a facelift with a 2.9ltr engine for the base model and direct fuel injection for the Boxster S, along with a new 6-speed manual and optional 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox. Cosmetic updates included new headlights, tail lights, larger front air intakes, and twin rear diffusers.

In February 2009, the Cayman was similarly updated. The base engine was increased to 2.9ltr, and the Cayman S received direct injection, maintaining a slight power advantage over the Boxster. A limited-slip differential became an option.

The 981 Cayman, introduced for the 2013 model year, remains a benchmark car, closing the gap with the 911 in desirability and performance. Its design was sleeker and more modern, with a longer wheelbase, wider tracks, and a lower height. The front and rear retained the classic Cayman look but featured sharper headlights, aggressive air intakes, and a wider aero wing integrated into the taillights.

The 2014 Cayman carried over the 9A1 engine from 2009 but reduced the base engine's displacement from 2.9 to 2.7ltrs, producing 275 horsepower and accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, faster than the 2006 Cayman S. It also delivered 32 mpg on the highway with PDK and Sport Chrono Plus. The Cayman S kept its 3.4ltr engine with a power increase to 325 hp, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and up to 30 mpg. Both models offered a 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed PDK transmission.
