944 2.5L 8V 1982-87

In 1982, Porsche unveiled the 944 2.5ltr 8 valve, marking a significant advancement over its predecessor, the 924. 

Boasting enhanced speed, improved handling, and superior refinement, the 944 offered drivers a heightened driving experience. Despite its slightly inferior drag coefficient, it outpaced the 924 and showcased superior equipment and comfort. With precise handling, robust stopping power, and enhanced drivability, the 944 was celebrated for its agility on the road.

The factory boasted an impressive acceleration time of less than 9 seconds for the 0–97 km/h (60 mph) sprint (8.3 seconds according to "Porsche the Ultimate Guide" By Scott Faragher), showcasing the car's formidable performance capabilities. Additionally, the 944 boasted nearly equal front-to-rear weight distribution, thanks to the rear transaxle balancing the front-mounted engine (50.7% front/49.3% rear), contributing to its balanced handling.

For the North American market, the 944 received modifications such as larger bumpers to comply with safety regulations, with the front bumper featuring a larger rubber portion, replacing the auxiliary lights as mandated by North American laws.

In the midst of 1985, the Porsche 944 underwent a significant overhaul, marking its first major set of changes. These included a range of updates aimed at enhancing performance, comfort, and safety. Among the notable alterations were a revamped dashboard and door panels, the integration of an embedded radio antenna, and an upgraded alternator boosting capacity from 90 to 115 amps. The oil sump capacity was increased, and both front and rear cast alloy control arms and semi-trailing arms were introduced. Furthermore, a larger fuel tank was installed, alongside optional heated and powered seats, and the introduction of the Porsche HiFi sound system. The mounting of the transaxle was revised to mitigate noise and vibration, while the front windshield transitioned to a flush-mounted design. Additionally, the iconic "cookie cutter" style wheels of earlier 944 models were replaced with new "phone dial" style wheels, although Fuchs wheels remained available as an option.
